 Blues tricks

Katz cuts quite a figure recently as keyboardist in the Ronnie Earl band. That band has made some of the tastiest jazz/blues/R&B of the ’90s. On this CD, however, Earl’s polish and inventiveness are sorely missed. The Katz band becomes a two-trick pony–slow blues and fast blues–with little but tempo to distinguish the tracks. The two tricks are done very well, but Katz will need more imagination than he shows here if he going to make it on his own.– Pete Kelly
